Captain Fantastic Leads England To Victory

David Beckham captained England who won 3-0 win against Trindad and Tobago.

As usual with Becks, some have taken a cynical view that his England captaincy was a politically-motivated stunt.

You see last nights game was Trindad's centenary, and FIFA vice-president Jack Warner is from Trinidad and he gets to vote for the Football Association's 2018 World Cup bid, which England are hoping to win.

OK it seems suspect, but why do people look at it this way. David is still a very much a part of the England side. His assists and passion for the game and playing for his country prove that. I wish people would just let him get on with what he does best.

It does not help when Jack Warner says to the press,
"If the English team had come with all its top stars to Trinidad and Beckham wasn't here, they would have killed me in this country. If Beckham alone had come, that would have been enough for me."

As for the game, it was very much a one-sided affair. Once England were 3-0 up, they took their foot off the gas, and one commentator said that he was struggling to keep awake.

Gareth Barry's scored his first international goal and a Jermain Defoe got two.

Beckham admitted he was not expecting to be handed the captaincy.

"I was surprised to be named captain. But when I’m asked, I will never turn it down and I was honoured."

"It was a comfortable display but we made it like that as we started well in the first 20 minutes and pressed them high up the pitch."

"The manager told us to take this game seriously, even though it was only a friendly."

"You play teams all around the world in international football and they all want to beat England."

"It’s a very serious and motivated camp."

"We all realise that we are a team and we need to be as one. The respect is there for each other."

"The World Cup qualifiers start now and we can’t wait for them to get under way because we want to win something."
